Dr. Kimberlynn J. Kleasen and Glenn S. Thomas Fund for Student Success

Helping students succeed and thrive at Michigan State, the Dr. Kimberlynn J. Kleasen and Glenn S. Thomas Fund for Student Success is provided to support first-generation college students participate in certain high-impact practices (HIPs). 

HIPs include out-of-classroom experiences showing evidence of great educational benefit contributing to student success and graduation. These experiences, as noted by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU), include service learning, internships, and undergraduate research to name a few.   • Field-based, “experiential learning” with community partners as an instructional strategy
  • Often part of an academic course, it gives students direct experience with issues they are studying in a community context
  • Apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings and reflect on the service experience in a classroom setting
  • Direct experience in a work setting, usually related to career interests
  • Get supervision and coaching from professionals in the field
  • Internships can be taken for course credit along with a project or paper approved by a faculty member
  • Active involvement in systematic investigation and research with faculty
  • Connect key concepts and questions with coursework
  • Sometimes called “senior capstones”, these experiences require students in their senior year to create a project integrating what they’ve learned
  • May be a research project, a performance, a portfolio or exhibit of artwork
  • Capstones are offered certain in departmental programs
  • Opportunity to complete coursework in an approved location outside of the US (internationally)
  • Live, learn and experience education in another country with classmates, faculty and staff
  • Programs offered each semester, including university breaks
  • Opportunity to complete coursework in an approved location within the US (domestically)
  • Live, learn and experience education in another US geographical region with classmates, faculty and staff
